How to reply to an RSVP, with examples
Reply by the date, the way the host asked, with a clear yes or no, how many of you are coming, and an answer to anything else they asked. Below are replies you can copy for formal, family, work and casual invitations, including by text and WhatsApp, and what to say when you are not sure yet.

What a reply needs
The host is counting. Every reply becomes a number for the venue or the caterer, so the useful reply is short and answers three things.
- Whether you are coming, yes or no, in the first line.
- How many of you. “Yes” from one person and “yes, the four of us” are different orders.
- Anything the host asked: dietary needs, a plus-one, a lift from the station.
Reply the way you were asked. If the invitation came with a card, send the card. If it came as a WhatsApp message with buttons, tap the button. A reply in a different channel is one the host has to copy across by hand, and it can get lost on the way.
Saying yes
Say yes, say how many, and add anything they asked for. Match the tone of the invitation.
Formal: a wedding, gala or milestone dinner
Dear Priya and David, thank you for the invitation to your wedding on Saturday 12 June. We would be delighted to attend. Two of us will be there, Amara and Kofi Mensah.
Family
Yes, we’re coming! All four of us. The kids are already asking what’s for dessert. Let me know if you want us to bring anything.
Friends
Yes, I’m in. Just me. See you Friday.
Work
Hi Sarah, yes, I’ll be at the team lunch on Thursday 10 December. No dietary requirements. Thanks for organising.
If you want to be funny about it, there are funny RSVP responses to copy, with one rule: the answer first, the joke second.
Saying no
A no is as useful to the host as a yes, as long as it is clear and arrives before the deadline. You do not owe a reason, and a vague one reads worse than none. Thank them, decline, and wish them well.
Dear Priya and David, thank you so much for inviting us to your wedding. We are sorry that we are unable to attend, and we wish you both a wonderful day.
Can’t make it this time, sorry! Have an amazing night and send me photos.
Hi Sarah, I can’t make the lunch on the 10th, unfortunately. Hope it goes well.
If you want to give a reason, keep it to one clause: “we’re away that weekend”. Avoid “I’ll try” and “I’ll see how I feel”. The host hears a maybe, and a maybe is a seat they can’t count.
When you are not sure yet
Say so, and give a date. “Maybe” makes the host chase you. “I’ll know by Thursday” lets them plan around you.
I’d love to come but I’m waiting on a work trip. I’ll know by Thursday and will confirm either way then.
Then confirm on Thursday, even if the answer is no. If you won’t know before the host’s deadline, give them a clean number to work with.
I won’t know until the 20th. If that’s too late for your numbers, count me as a no, and I’ll happily take a seat if one opens up.
Plus-ones and dietary needs
Bring a guest only if the invitation names them or says you can. “And guest” means one. If it isn’t there, ask rather than assume: “Is it all right if I bring Jordan?”
When the host asks about dietary needs, answer for everyone you are replying for, and say “none” if you have none, so the host knows you saw the question. A real allergy goes in its own sentence with no joke attached, so it is read once and passed to the kitchen as written.
Yes, both of us. Maya is vegetarian. I have no dietary requirements.
Yes, I’m coming. Severe nut allergy, including traces, please.
The host’s side of this question is in how to collect dietary requirements.
Replying by text or WhatsApp
If the message has Yes and No buttons, tap one. That reply is counted the moment you tap it. If there are no buttons, write one message that starts with your answer.
Yes! Count me in. Just me.
Yes, we’ll be there, three of us. One vegetarian.
Sorry, can’t make it that night. Have a great time.
A few things help the host.
- Reply to the host directly, not in the group chat. A reply in the group disappears between forty other messages and a photo of someone’s lunch.
- Send one message, not three. “yes”, then “actually 2 of us”, then “wait, make that 3” is three edits to the list.
- Put the answer first. A message that opens with a question (“Is it okay if I come late?”) reads as a maybe.
- If the host confirms your answer (“Got it, see you on the 28th!”), you don’t owe a reply. A thumbs-up or “Great, see you then” is plenty.
Hosting yourself? The host’s side, from the message to send to keeping the count, is in RSVP by text message.
Changing your answer
Plans change. Tell the host as soon as you know, before the deadline if you can, and make the new answer as clear as the first.
Change of plans, I can’t come on the 28th after all. Sorry to miss it.
Good news, I can make it after all. Is there still room for one?
A late yes is a question, not an announcement. The host may already have given the venue a final number. What they are working around is in how to politely ask guests to RSVP: a date their venue needs the count by.
How this works in Avently
- Step 01
Tap Yes or No
An Avently invitation arrives on WhatsApp addressed to you by name, with the event and date, and Yes and No buttons. One tap is your reply, and the host sees it straight away.
- Step 02
Typing works too
A reply that starts with yes, yep, sure, no, sorry or can’t is counted, and so is a 👍 or ✅. If Avently can’t tell what you meant, it asks the question again.
- Step 03
Say yes, then answer the follow-ups
After a yes, the host’s questions arrive one at a time, such as how many seats and any dietary needs, as buttons or a list. Guests who say no are thanked and asked nothing more.
- Step 04
Reply CHANGE to change your answer
If your plans change, reply CHANGE and the Yes and No buttons come back. The host’s guest list shows your new answer.
Common questions
How do you respond to an RSVP?
Reply by the deadline, in the way the host asked (a card, a link, a text, or the buttons in a WhatsApp message), with a clear yes or no, how many of you are coming, and answers to anything else they asked, such as dietary needs. “Yes, two of us, no dietary requirements” is a complete RSVP.
How do you RSVP by text?
Send one message that starts with your answer, to the host directly rather than in the group chat: “Yes, I’ll be there, just me” or “Sorry, I can’t make it this time.” If the message has Yes and No buttons, tap one. The tap is the reply.
How do you RSVP to an invitation on WhatsApp?
If the message has Yes and No buttons, tap one. If it is a WhatsApp Event in a group, tap Going, Maybe or Not going. Otherwise reply to the host directly, not in the group, with your answer first and how many of you are coming: “Yes, two of us. See you Saturday.”
What do you write when you RSVP yes?
Yes, how many of you, and anything the host asked for. For a formal invitation: “We would be delighted to attend. Two of us will be there.” For friends: “Yes! Count me in, just me.”
How do you politely decline an RSVP?
Thank them, say you can’t come, and wish them well: “Thank you for inviting us. Sadly we can’t make it, and we hope it’s a wonderful day.” You don’t need to give a reason. Avoid “I’ll try”, which the host has to count as a maybe.
Can you reply maybe to an RSVP?
Avoid it. A maybe is a seat the host can’t count. Say when you will know, “I’ll confirm by Thursday either way”, and confirm on that day. If you won’t know before the host’s deadline, decline, and say you would take a late seat if one opens up.
Do you reply to an RSVP confirmation text?
You don’t have to. If the host confirms your answer (“Got it, see you on the 28th”), a thumbs-up or “Great, see you then” is plenty.
What if I said yes and can no longer come?
Tell the host as soon as you know, before their deadline if you can, in one clear line: “Change of plans, I can’t make the 28th after all. Sorry to miss it.” The sooner they hear, the sooner they can fix the numbers with the venue.
Avently sends every guest a WhatsApp invitation with Yes and No buttons, so the reply is one tap, and asks your follow-up questions only after a yes.
